St. John’s Church of England Primary School Newsletter - Learning and Caring Together - Issue 8 Friday 9th November 2018 Remembrance Firstly, thank you to all the families who made such beautiful poppies for our special JOY challenge last week. Together with hundreds of poppies made in school, we have decorated St. John’s Church in a manner to remember. The whole school visited the breath-taking display yesterday as part of a special service led by Father Chris which started our remembrance events in school. There is a coffee morning in Church on Saturday morning for any families who wish to view the remembrance display. Today in school, Year 6 lead a truly memorable service which they wrote themselves to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One. Truly poignant and we thank and congratulate all involved for making the service so moving. Anti-Bullying Week Next week we will de discussing bullying as part of our work for anti-bullying week. Mrs Thompson will be leading the week with a special assembly built around our core value of respect and Mrs Wignall will be following up with an assembly based around cyber-bullying and how to stay safe online. On Monday, to celebrate the work of the Anti-Bullying Trust we are asking for ALL children to wear odd socks! No donation is required but we would love to highlight the work of this important organisation. Children in Need Next Friday (16th November) is Children in Need and we will be joining in the fundraising in school with classroom activities and a special assembly. Children are invited to come to school in their own clothes (MUFTI) in exchange for a donation of £1 which will be passed on to Children in Need. Spots are optional but not essential! Wigs! Emma and Isabelle in Year 5 are having 12 inches of their hair cut off this weekend to donate to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs for children suffering from cancer or other serious illnesses. One of our ex-parents, Jo Machell, will be doing the honours and helping two little superstars donate to such a worthy cause. In addition to their haircuts, the girls have set up a Just Giving page through Isabelle’s mum, for anyone who may wish to sponsor the girls. Money raised will be donated to Alder Hey as both families have had family members who have been treated there and it is the girls’ way of saying thank you for all the fantastic support. The link for anyone wishing to donate is below; both families are so proud of the girls as we all are in school and thank you in advance for any donations, no matter how small. http://justgiving.com/Heather-Culshaw1 Match Report – written by Miss Lovelock The girls played an exciting match against OLOL Primary School last Friday. Unfortunately we were defeated in both games but we certainly put up a good fight! The enthusiasm from the girls was outstanding as usual and we saw two excellent goals scored by Emma. A big thank you to Lily’s dad for sharing his expertise at training and to everyone who came to support the team. Well done girls!  Parents Evenings Next Monday and Wednesday we will be holding parent teacher meetings. Thanks to all who returned slips before the deadline and hopefully you have all received your time slot. Any late replies will have been allocated a time. Please try and keep to the appointments next week as our teachers have so much on with staff meetings and running clubs after school.
