Global Health A Gapminder Exploration

TASK 1: PREPARE TO BE AMAZED! 200 COUNTRIES, 200 YEARS, 4 MINUTES: THE JOY OF STATS Watch the video Hans Rosling produced as part of the Gap Minder project.

What questions do you have about what we just watched? AMERICAS EUROPE AFRICA ASIA INDIA What questions do you have about what we just watched?

STEP 2: EXPLORE THE TOOL GET IN YOUR GROUPS GRAB A DEVICE TURN IT ON NAVIGATE TO WWW.GAPMINDER.ORG/TOOLS

INVESTIGATE! Can you change/adjust Variables on the x-axis Variables on the y-axis Scales for the variables Which countries’ information is shown The speed of animation The type of charts shown

STEP 3: ESSENTIAL QUESTION HOW CAN DATA DISPLAYS BE USED TO COMPARE COUNTRIES OVER TIME? Select two countries that interest you and check their box in the menu to the right. Choose one variable you’d like to use in your comparison and set the y-axis to that variable. Set the x-axis to time Set the scale of the y-axis to linear Set the scale of the x-axis to linear Turn on the trails Play the animation Collect and then display the data in another way What conclusions can you draw?

STEP 4: PREPARE A PRESENTATION SHARE WHAT YOU LEARNED Prepare a 2-3 minute presentation that: Describes why you selected the variable and countries you wanted to compare Includes the chart you created Compares your two selected countries using written and verbal statements Supports your comparison statements using an alternate display of the data (E.g. box and whisker plot, histogram, line plot, etc.) Provides your conjectures as to why the differences/similarities exist

STEP 5: PRESENT & PEER REVIEW PRESENT TO YOUR PEERS Present what you have learned to the class. Be sure to use enthusiasm, good vocal volume, and eye-contact. & PEER REVIEW As your peers present, be a good audience member by listening attentively, filling out the peer review form, and asking good questions.
