To find out where someone is from you might ask: Where are you from? Woher kommst du? Woher bist du?

To find out where someone is from you might ask: Are you from Germany? Bist du aus Deutschland? Kommst du aus Deutschland?

The other person might respond. I am from Texas. Ich komme aus Texas. Ich bin aus Texas.

The other person might respond. No, I am from Wisconsin. Nein, ich bin aus Wisconsin.

To find out where someone else is from you ask: And Mr. Gärtner, the German teacher, where is he from? Und Herr Gärtner, der Deutschlehrer, woher ist er?

The other person might respond: He is from Austria. Er ist aus Österriech.

To find out where someone else is from you ask: Is Inge also from Austria? Kommt die Inge auch aus Österriech?

The other person might respond: No, she is from Thüringer. Nein, sie kommt aus Thüringer.
