Presentation transcript:

The power of WORDS Although we are born with the gift of language, research shows that we are surprisngly unskilled when it comes to communicate with others. We often choose our thoughts without thoughts, oblivious of the emotional effects they can have on others. We talk more than we need to. We listen poorly without realising it and we often fail to pay attention to the subtle meanings conveyed by facial expressions, body gestures and the tone and cadence of our voice-elements of communication that are often more important than the words we actually say.

Words and our brain How words function and process within our brains. Speech: words and melody/intonation. The rhythm and intonation of a persons voice affects us on a deep emotional level.

Exercise 1 Listening in a new way     Which attitudes did the different speakers communicate? (friendly, angry, sad…) Which emotions was evoked by the different speeches? what did you feel? What was the main difference of the speeches? Which speech did appeal to you the most, and why?

How does words affect us Using positive words and images can trigger the production of oxytocin, the neurochemical that helps trigger feelings such as well-being, affinity, and security.

Exercise 3 Get your message through in a new way   You Free Because Instantly New How can you best use as many as possible of these persuasive words in a PREM talk (PR-talk) to inform people about your club? Think of it as you´re going to sell a product/service, and see what happens. Your main goal is to persuade someone to visit or become a member of your club. Be free and play with it! Make it short and to the point! Ps. Don´t forget the positive words.

When we analyze people’s use of function words, we can get a sense of their emotional state and personality, as well as their age and social class. Pronouns: he, she, they, it, we,who Conjunctions: and, as because, but, just as or, whether, yet

Example of a simple, pronoun-heavy sentence: I don’t think I buy it I don’t buy it Pronouns tell us where people focus their attention. If someone uses the pronoun “I”, a lot, it’s a sign of self-focus, but also a sign of honesty.

By changing the way we use our language, we change our consciousness, and that, in turn, influences every thought, feeling and behavior in our life. Words do have power
