Gerunds Gerund—verbal that ends in –ing and is used as a noun. “Healing requires taking responsibility for your actions” (12). Cole expresses his anger by fighting. The island requires healing.

“It” Test Before doing ANYTHING, you should do the “it” test first. If you decide the word is a gerund, you should be able to replace it with the word “it”. If it makes sense when you replace the word with “it” Ex: Snorkeling is a wonderful adventure. It is a wonderful adventure. Does this make sense?

Gerund Practice A win requires earning. Kicking earns points in two different ways in this sport. A team earns three points by kicking. Defending goal is crucial in most sports. Eating is allowed only in the lobby. The mosquitoes finally stopped biting. Walking is good exercise.
