Using Semicolons

Use semicolons to join independent clauses Use a semicolon only if the clauses are closely related. We have seen the enemy he is us. Tuition fees are tax deductible entertainment expenses are not. Some people get an education without going to college the rest get it after they get out. Mark Twain ; ; ;

Use semicolons with conjunctive adverbs or introductory expressions ; , I really respect you however I think we should just be friends. Periods and commas are not the only difficult forms of punctuation for example we also have colons semicolons and apostrophes to deal with. ; , , ,

Use semicolons in a list with internal commas The most exciting cities in Canada are Brandon Manitoba Sydney Nova Scotia and Whitehorse Yukon. We invited delegates from several different departments Andy Cap Accounting Mary Worth Human Resources Rex Morgan Health and Safety and Dick Tracy Security. , ; , ; , : , ; , ; , ; ,

USE A SEMICOLON Between two complete sentences. Each sentence on either side of the semicolon must be complete with its own subject and verb. Keep in mind that a semicolon functions the same way as a period and a capital letter. EXAMPLE: Please open the window; it is hot in here.

USE A SEMICOLON Between two complete sentences connected by words like however, therefore, consequently, nevertheless, and then. EXAMPLE: We are creating study guides to help students prepare for the tests; however, students’ scores are reflecting improvement.

USE A SEMICOLON Between items of a series that have internal commas. EXAMPLE: I bought an old, dilapidated chair; a marble top table, which was in beautiful condition; and a new, ugly white rug. EXAMPLE: We are thinking about moving to Omaha, Nebraska; Gainesville, Florida; or Memphis, Tennessee.
