Everette Lee 1886-1956 Physicist, philanthropist, and socialist in Dallas, Texas He realised that the same feature might be perceived differently by different individuals.

Lee’s Migration Theory Divides factors causing migrations into two groups of factors, push and pull. The factors are either economic, cultural, or environmental push- things that are unfavorable about the area that one lives in and pushes out the population pull-things that attract one to an area

Aim of Theory He tried to explain the factors affecting migration in terms of the positive and negative characteristics of both the origin and destination.

Push and Pull Factors Factors which either forcefully push people into migration or attract them. An example would include civil disputes amongst countries causing outbreaks of war resulting in people fleeing.

Push Factors Conditions that drive people to leave their homes. Examples: Land scarce in home country Political and/or religious persecution Revolutions Poverty Not enough jobs Famine/drought Natural Disasters

Pull Factors Conditions that attract people to a new area. Examples: Promise of freedom (religious and political) Hope for a new life Industry Jobs Land New opportunities
