Functional Group Project Tuesday, November 21, 2017 Functional Group Project Objective: I will identify and name basic functional groups, describe naming patterns, and relate certain functional groups to smells.

Functional Group Group Presentations Research functional group and create a large poster including: Description of group and physical properties that functional group adds to a molecule (smell, boiling/melting point) Chemical naming with prefixes/suffixes Drawing of the atomic bonding of this group (generic) 1-2 example molecules that include this group (depending on size, 1 large (>15 atoms) or 2 small (<15 atoms)) Any additional information associated with this functional group (common uses, common substances, biological importance, etc)

Timeline Tuesday 11/21 - Learn about project, choose functional groups, do research and compile information Monday 11/27 - Make poster (start) Wednesday 11/29 - Make poster (finish) Thursday 11/30 – Group presentations, all students have recorded information on all functional groups
