Hew Locke Materials? Composition? Why?

What does it remind you of? Is there a focal point or central point? Do you know what the title refers to?

What does the artist explore in their practice in general?

What is this particular piece telling us/trying to do?

What feelings or reactions does this work evoke?

Hew Locke - Jungle Queen II, (2003) The New Art Gallery Walsall (C) Hew Locke. All rights reserved, DACS 2013. These are both images of the Walsall Art Gallery of Jungle Queen II installed completely. I placed this image to explain both scale and possibly show more texture through the images as it’s wuite hard to comprehend through these images. The piece itself inclused a wood/cardboard board, which is also layered to display distinguishable facial features which is then draped and covered in ready mades, plastic plants, leaves and fruit as well as pom poms and materials resembling coloured spider webs.

Hew Locke - Jungle Queen II, (2003) The New Art Gallery Walsall (C) Hew Locke. All rights reserved, DACS 2013. Reflection of the Big Dipper – Jackson Pollock (1947) My immediate thoughts of the piece are the complete overwhelming choices of colour and line, using strings to create focal points, which is similar to the image displayed by Jackson Pollock on the right. Both artists have used colour and line to illustrate movement and emotion. Both include a wide range of colour, variations from bright yellows and oranges to deepers colours such as greens and blues. Both are very densley textured, but obviously they both include their own medium-specifities. Both pieces completely use every aspect of the canvas, never leaving any plank areas, complete colour and this is quite aesthetically overwhelming.
