MUSCLES

MUSCLES 1. There are over 600 muscles in the body. 2. All muscles contract (shorten) only 3. There are 3 kinds of muscles

Three Kinds of Muscle

SKELETAL MUSCLES 1. Connects to bones… causes them to move 2. Also called banded or striated muscle 3. Also called voluntary muscles .. You make them move 4. These muscles react quickly and tire quickly

Movement When your muscle contracts (shortens) it pulls on the tendon, which pulls on your bone and they move together

Tendon vs. Ligament

The biceps are the flexor The triceps are the extensor

SMOOTH MUSCLE 1. Does not have bands 2. They contract without you thinking about it 3. Also called involuntary muscle 4. Controls breathing, blood pressure and digestion 5. Reacts slowly and tires slowly

CARDIAC MUSCLE 1. Only found in the heart 2. Muscle fibers form mesh 3. Do not tire out 4. Produce their own signal

Voluntary vs. Involuntary Under your control Skeletal Muscle Ex: bicep Not under your control Smooth & cardiac Ex: stomach muscles Some muscles can be both, like your eye muscles

Summary types of muscles Description Found Voluntary or involuntary Skeletal muscle Moves bones Arms, legs voluntary Cardiac Never gets tired Heart Involuntary Smooth Organs Intestine, stomach
