Bell work: What do you think was the most important technological advance in WW2? Why?

American reaction and response to the Holocaust (US 70) 1. Anti-Semitism existed in the US, but not to the degree as in Germany. 2. Once known here, the press kept the information low key. During WWI, many German atrocities were found to be false after being published in American newspapers. 3. A weak Bermuda Conference was held with America and Britain.

American reaction and response to the Holocaust (US 70) 4. Finally, in 1944 the US set up the War Refugee Board. While it is thought that this agency eventually saved about 200,000 lives, there remains debate today about how slowly we reacted.

World War II Yalta Conference (US 71) Feb 4-11, 1945 Winston Churchill. Joseph Stalin, and Franklin Roosevelt met at this Russian Crimean resort town.

Yalta Conference Agreements: Soviets would help defeat Japan in exchange for some Asian territories. Germany would pay some war reparations. Eastern European countries would have free elections. Security Council would now include France in the future United Nations.

World War II Potsdam Conference (US 71) July 17-Aug 2, 1945 Joseph Stalin, Clement Atlee, and Harry Truman met at Potsdam, Germany. Germany would be divided into four zones of Allied occupation. Complete disarmament and demilitarization of Germany. All vestiges of the Nazi era would be removed.

Potsdam Conference At this meeting, Truman informed Stalin of the first atomic bomb blast.

World War II United Nations (US 72) Established Oct 24, 1945 in San Francisco. Its goal was to promote international cooperation. There were 51 member states (now has 193). During WWII, FDR wanted a successor to the League of Nations.

World War II Cordell Hull (US 72) A Tennessean, he was the longest serving Secretary of State of the United States (1933-1944). He was instrumental in establishing the United Nations, and in 1945, won a Nobel Peace prize for this work. FDR called him the “Father of the United Nations.”
