History of the Magna Carta Richard the Lionheart

King John of England

John signed the “Article of the Barons” in a meadow such as this one. John signs the “Article of the Barons” in Runnymede on June 15, 1215.

King Henry III Reissued the Magna Carta three times.

Edward I Reissued the Magna Carta one last time on October 12, 1297. It was part of a statute known as “Confirmatio cartarum”

Article 39. No free man shall be arrested, or imprisoned, or deprived of his property, or outlawed, or exiled, or in any way destroyed, nor shall we go against him or send against him, unless by legal judgement of his peers, or by the law of the land. Article 40. To no one will we sell, to no one will we refuse or delay, right or justice.

United States Constitution

U.S. Bill of Rights No person shall be ... deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.

Article 21 from the Declaration of Rights in the Maryland Constitution of 1776 reads: That no freeman ought to be taken, or imprisoned, or disseized of his freehold, liberties, or privileges, or outlawed, or exiled, or in any manner destroyed, or deprived of his life, liberty, or property, but by the judgment of his peers, or by the law of the land.
