What do you know about ground water and surface water? Monday April 16, 2018 What do you know about ground water and surface water? Discuss the differences at your table.

Surface Water —the water in the nation’s rivers, streams, creeks, lakes. The main uses of surface water include drinking-water and other public uses, irrigation uses, and for use by industry to cool electricity-generating equipment. Groundwater is an important part of the water cycle. Groundwater is the part of precipitation that seeps down through the soil until it reaches rock material that is saturated with water. Water in the ground is stored in the spaces between rock particles (no, there are no underground rivers or lakes). Groundwater slowly moves underground, generally at a downward angle (because of gravity), ending up in our aquifers.

Groundwater is the source of about 33 % of the water that county and city water departments supply to households and businesses. Even some major cities, such as San Antonio, Texas, rely solely on groundwater for all their needs. About 42 % of the water used for irrigation comes from groundwater. Withdrawals of groundwater are expected to rise as the population increases and available sites for surface reservoirs become more limited.

Explain/describe a watershed. Tuesday April 17, 2018 Explain/describe a watershed.

A region or area bounded by a divide and draining to a particular watercourse or body of water

Watersheds are important because the surface water features and storm water runoff within a watershed ultimately drain to other bodies of water. It is essential to consider these downstream impacts when developing and implementing water quality protection and restoration actions. Everything upstream ends up downstream.

Lab Station Set-Up: -pan with riser -beaker for water -pipette -”rain” cup -scraper for clean up -“catch tub” nothing goes down sink. -Sponge

Materials Table One person obtains the groups choices of ground material. Group will test for water permeability; what type of material will hold the most water? What type of material will allow water the flow? Why is this relevant?

Clean-Up NOTHING GOES INTO SINK! Using the scraper separate your materials left in pan. Return to materials table. “Catch tub” is poured into bucket. Wipe down your area. Leave it like you found it.

Using household items, describe how an aquifer works. Wednesday April 18, 2018 Using household items, describe how an aquifer works.

A collection of wet, underground rocks that allow water to pass through them slowly is called an aquifer. Aquifers are the main way people get clean, useable water.
