What occurred during the early years of Reconstruction? Notes #23 General Robert E. Lee and the South (Confederacy) surrenders (April 9, 1865)

Reconstruction was a period/plan after the Civil War when the U. S Reconstruction was a period/plan after the Civil War when the U.S. government attempted to restore the South to the Union (U.S.).

Former Confederate leaders, President Jefferson Davis and During Reconstruction, President Abraham Lincoln planned to pardon the South and quickly restore the Union. Former Confederate leaders, President Jefferson Davis and General Robert E. Lee

Similar to Lincoln, Johnson wanted to allow the Southern states to re-enter the Union as quickly as possible.

However, a group called the Radical Republicans controlled Congress and they wanted to punish the South . . .

. . . by using Reconstruction to force political and social reform in the Southern states.

Serious differences between Congress and Johnson over how to handle Reconstruction resulted in the impeachment of Johnson in 1868.

Johnson was acquitted, but lost his political power, and the Radical Republicans in Congress dictated the terms of Reconstruction thereafter.
