Southwest Asia Wars 1st Period

Persian Gulf War It was a war between Iraq and UN forces led by the US. Saddam Hussein had accused Kuwait of stealing their oil, and invaded Kuwait. Saddam really wanted Kuwait’s oil fields. In January 1991 U.S. and other nations attacked Iraq. The Iraqi government was defeated in less than two months.

US Invasion of Afghanistan Sept. 11, 2001 al-Qaeda (Afghan terrorist group led by Osama bin Laden) hijacked four planes and flew two of them into the World Trade Center in NY. One plane flew into the Pentagon, and the fourth never reached its destination. President George W. Bush called on other countries to help wage a war on terrorism. Oct. 2001 US and British troops invaded Afghanistan in search of bin Laden. May 2, 2011 bin Laden was killed by the US government.

Iraq War Iraq, still under dictator Saddam Hussein, was building weapons of mass destruction according to the US. 2003 US began bombing Iraq (Britain, Australia, and Poland joined us)…this was known as Operation Iraqi Freedom. US forces captured Saddam Hussein, he was tried and sentenced to death for “crimes against humanity.” Saddam was killed in 2006. Over ½ million Iraqis died, 4,000 American soldiers were killed, and more than 20,000 wounded.
