Adaptations in the rainforest Starter. On your desks are a ‘rainforest challenge worksheet’. Follow the instructions, and see who can get the answers first.

Learning Objectives To know some of the adaptations of animals in the Tropical Rainforest (L4/5) To be able to explain why and animals that have had to adapt in certain ways (L5/6) To be able to apply knowledge to create your own adapted animal (L6/7)

Around the room there are different animals Around the room there are different animals. You have to use their picture to think about the answer to these questions...

1. What is the name of this animal? 2. Describe its main features 3. What problems might this animal face? 4. How has this animal adapted/evolved to survive in the rainforest? (Why is it like it is?)

Your Task You are a scientist who has been asked to design a new animal to live in the tropical rainforest. With the advances biology it is now possible to create animals and to pick and choose what characteristics the animal would have to be adapted to the tropical rainforest

Sharp claws to attack predators and hang from branches to hide from predators on the ground. Tiny camouflaging algae that make them more difficult for predators to spot. Developed a long, large bill. Allows bird to reach fruit on branches to small to support the birds weight The bill is used to squash the fruits and berries he eats. Good climbers - are able to jump fifteen metres between two trees

Points to Consider What layer of the rainforest will your animal live in? How big will it be? How will it move through the rainforest? What will it eat/how will it get its food? How will it defend itself against predators? In the rainforest do you want to be noticed/camouflaged? Do you want wings if you find your food on the forest floor?

However, you only have a budget of £1000! Catalogue Characteristic Price Characteristic Price Small Body £100 Good Eyesight £100 Large Body £100 Nocturnal £150 Wing £90 each Good sense of smell £100 Fast Runner £150 Sharp Claws £150 Sharp teeth/Large Bill £200 Swims £150 Herbivore £100 Agile £100 Carnivore £100 Gives off bad smell £90 Can stand on 2 legs £110 Thick Fur £100 Climbs Trees £150 Bright Colouring £150 Dull Colouring/Camouflage £200 Can hold breath £150 Long Neck £120 Good Hearing £100 Before you start drawing your animal write down which characteristics you are going to give your animal and why

A previous example WWW: They have thoroughly explained why they gave their animal each of its characteristics They have designed it’s characteristics so that it can survive in its specific habitat in the TRF (the undergrowth)

Plenary In your books, write the adaptations of an animal we have learnt about today, and why they have had to adapt. DO NOT WRITE THE NAME OF THE ANIMAL! Let’s guess the animal....
