Review of EQ1 How and why places vary

Revision – how and why places vary

Changing employment Changing types of employment Recent growth of quaternary and quinary industry Mechanisation of ag and ind means less employment, Increasing wealth > afford better servicves, better education > R+D, globalisation and foreign competition > decline of secondary industry

Spatial variations Functions of places – determined by economic factors, also by people who live there Comparison between London and North West These can change over time – eg decline of manufacturing industry in northern UK cities, result of globalisation and changes in UK as moved to post industrial economy

Impacts on quality of life Variations in income contribute to variations in health and education – why? Type of job – manual v white collar Diet Housing Ability to afford health and education – also ability to access services Life style choices do play a part though Exacerbated in some areas with concentrations of poverty and BME populations

Changes to places Changes to functions and character of places result of; Globalisation – eg factory closures, migration Changes in accessibility – both in transport and IT – enable homeworking Government plans – eg ‘northern powerhouse’, closure of rail lines in 1960s led to decline of railway towns Growth of north-south divide in UK – with overheated SE and northern towns left behind

What is quinary industry? (2) What is gentrification? (2) What factors affect the identity of places? (3) How and why have economic sectors changed in the UK over the last century?(6) What impacts have these changes had on place characteristics in the UK? (3) What are the factors creating differences in pay in the UK? (4) What are the factors creating differences in health and educational attainment in the UK? (4) How and why have functions shifted in their type and location in urban and rural areas over the past few decades? (3) Suggest reasons why lifestyle choices may affect health (3) Suggest reasons for the concentration of lowest life expectancy in particular parts of London (6)
