Constitutional Changes To adapt to changing needs and attitudes Several lately have dealt with who has the right to vote

Abolishing Slavery Slavery was not abolished by Constitution because Southern states would not have ratified Dred Scott decision – slaves are property and owners can take them anywhere 13th Amendment ended slavery after Civil War

African Americans and the Right to Vote 14th Amendment –ensured African American citizenship 15th Amendment – states could not deny right to vote 24th Amendment – made poll taxes illegal

Women and the Right to Vote Suffragists pushed for the 19th Amendment and the right to vote 19th Amendment ratified in 1920

Youth and the Right to Vote Voting age was 21, but draft age was 18 People said if you are old enough to fight, you are old enough to vote 26th Amendment lowered voting age to 18

Voice of the People 27th Amendment is the most recent and said that if Congress voted to raise their salaries, it would not go into effect until after next election
