Emotional Strength Training Lesson 4 Understanding Other People’s Emotions

Review All people have emotions. Anger is a necessary and natural reaction. Aggression is not the best way to deal with anger. What are the steps of the Anger Model? Trigger Interpretation Emotional Reaction Decision Behavior Consequence

Review What are some anger control skills? Count backwards If-then statements Self-talk Self-evaluation Which anger control skill do you use? Which one works best for you?

Empathy Today we will learn how to notice other people’s feelings, try to understand those feelings better, and see a situation from another person’s perspective. What clues tell us how someone is feeling? Facial expression- smiling, frowning, eyebrows Hands- clenched or loose Shoulders- pulled back, hunched over Anything else?

Partner Activity In pairs, you will practice “guessing” the emotion of the other person. Take turns acting out an emotion while the other person looks for physical clues and makes a guess of the emotion. (Emotions Handout) Share out: What clues did you see your partner show?

Small Group Activity Students will get into four groups. Each group will have one situation on half-sheet of paper. One person from each group will read the situation. The group will nominate two people to act out the situation. As a group, answer the questions on the half-sheet of paper.

Exit Slip Identify two visual clues that can tell you how someone is feeling. Describe how two people can have different perspectives on the same situation. For example, in math class the teacher tells you to stop talking, but you don’t think you were talking in the first place. It was the same situation, but two different perspectives.
