Chapter 5 Lesson 1: The Sun. What is the Sun? A star which produces its own energy (light) There are stars which can make ten million times what the sun.
The Sun 24.3 A typical star powered by nuclear reactions Mostly the (fusion of hydrogen to form helium) Which releases energy.

The Sun’s Structure. The Core The temperature inside the sun’s core reaches about 15 million degrees Celsius. The sun produces an enormous amount of energy.
The Sun – Our Local Star Only star in our solar system Consists mostly of Hydrogen Gas Hydrogen turns into helium producing energy that is the source of.
Solar Properties Has more than 99% the mass of our solar system Has more than 99% the mass of our solar system Diameter: 1,390,000 km Diameter: 1,390,000.
 Sunspots – regions of strong magnetic activity. Sunspots are cooler than the rest of the photosphere and appear as dark splotches on the Sun. They seem.
1. Name one part of the sun. 2. Is the sun a solid, liquid or gas? 3. How hot was the center of the sun when it officially became a star?
The Sun! PH Previously, in physical science… You learned how gravity is a force that attracts all objects toward each other. Now, you will.

Science Planner 12/6/16 WALT: understand and graph Sunspot cycles. WU: Yesterday’s Sunrise/Sunset Data. Sunrise = 7:42 am Sunset = 4:21 pm Graph the point and connect the dots with a smooth line. CW: Tests Back Graphing Sunspot Data.

Sun Notes: Chromosphere – Lowest level of the Suns atmosphere. Core – Area where nuclear fusion is taking place. Radiation Zone – Where energy is transferred from the core to the convection zone. Convection Zone – the subsurface zone which brings hot material from the center of the Sun to the surface. Photosphere – the visible surface of the Sun. (Sunspots) Corona – Outermost atmosphere of the Sun. Visible during Solar Eclipses.

Assignment Construct your graph. Follow all instructions carefully. Construct the horizontal axis of “your specific” graph. Graph the specific data you are given. Then connect all dots. Group 1: Years 1800 – 1830 Group 2: Years 1825 – 1855 Group 3: Years 1850 – 1880 Group 4: Years 1875 – 1905 Group 5: Years 1900 – 1930 Group 6: Years 1925 – 1955 Group 7: Years 1950 – 1980 Group 8: Years 1975 – 1999 All data is found on pages 110 and 111 in your book.
