JOURNAL: Write about a time that you had to make a decision. Consider the following: What was the scenario leading up to the decision? What had to be decided? What did you decide to do and how did you choose? Was it a difficult choice to make? Why or why not?

THE BRAIN PARIETAL LOBE FRONTAL LOBE CORPUS CALLOSUM OCCIPITAL LOBE PITUITARY GLAND AMYGDALA TEMPORAL LOBE CEREBELLUM PONS MEDULLA OBLONGATA SPINAL CORD

BRAIN FACT Your brain reaches its maximum size between ages 12-14, but its development is far from complete

When and why might this be a problem for teenagers??? AMYGDALA FRONTAL LOBE vs The control center of your brain—responsible for rational thought and logic Used more by adults during decision making process Part of the limbic system—the emotional center of your brain Used more by adolescents during the decision making process When and why might this be a problem for teenagers???

NEURONS (NERVE CELLS)

HOW IT WORKS…

Damaged Circuits

USE IT OR LOSE IT… In synaptic pruning, synapses not used very often are removed, allowing the brain to redirecting resources towards more active synapses This means that teens have the potential to shape their own brain development—”Use them or lose them”

BRAINSTORM WITH A PARTNER… Knowing what you do now about the physiology of your brain, what are some things you can do to help you make good decisions (specifically regarding your health) in the future?

By learning and repeating appropriate behaviors (i. e By learning and repeating appropriate behaviors (i.e. role playing), you can help to shape your mind and future!!
