LAU and SIRE Agenda: 5.3; Document 11 LAU and SIRE pt. 5.3 LAU and SIRE Agenda: 5.3; Document 11 Torbioern.Carlquist@cec.eu.int revised version of 29 October 2004 (slide 4)

Chapter 1 LAU

Local Administrative Units (LAU) LAU level 2 = former NUTS 5 LAU level 1 = former NUTS 4 (and maybe new NUTS 4?) NUTS Regulation, annex 3, speaks about ”Smaller Administrative Units” – these are LAU 2 in most countries LAU codes will be created by Eurostat

Lists of LAU NUTS Regulation article 4 Commission shall publish components of NUTS in terms of “Smaller Administrative Units” Lists for EU-15 available on RAMON server LAU data requests New Member States: request was sent, deadline = 12 November 2004 Old Member States: request for 2004 data will be sent end of the year (like last year)

Chapter 2 SIRE database

SIRE database « Système d’information Infra-Régionale Européenne » Contains the codes of LAU 1 and LAU 2 Population Census data 1981, 1991, 2001 Stored in an Oracle database For internal use by the Commission

Evolution of codes Reports on changes to LAU from MS CONC/MODA format Separate software (NPS) to store the history of the nomenclature of LAU Both national codes and LAU codes

Population census data in SIRE Community Population Census Programme 10-yearly interval, last 2000/2001 Three tables for LAU 2 Two tables for urban agglomerations Countries without census – register data or other solutions Delays of delivery of census data from many countries Table 38a (total pop.) missing for BG,MT,LI

Annual data for LAU Internal need for up-to-date figures on Surface area Total population Some countries included these data in the LAU lists Used for density calculations in the rural project (doc. 20) Stored in the SIRE database

PHARE - Local Territorial Units Successful project with PHARE countries in 2002-2003 New PHARE project for technical work to integrate data into SIRE database Cyprus and Malta not covered by PHARE Separate co-operation project welcome for CY, MT Turkey has co-op. project (USST) and agreement on LAU has been reached

Conclusions LAU lists will be asked from MS each year Deadline for new MS: 12 November 2004 Please include area and population in LAU lists! Remaining census data should be sent by MS MS should continue to send CONC/MODA files to Eurostat Co-operation project about Local Territorial Units with CY and MT would be welcome

Thanks for listening ! Any Questions ?
