Propaganda is… Information put out by an organization or government to spread and promote a policy, idea, doctrine, or cause A specific type of message directly aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of people Something we see EVERY DAY!!!

Forms of Propaganda: Where do we see it? Speeches Commercials (radio, TV) Print Ads (magazines, fliers, posters) Internet ads Mass E-mail (SPAM!) Billboards/posters

Propaganda Techniques 1. Rhetorical Questions A question that does not require an answer- used to emphasize a particular point *Used to make someone think about something specific Example: All State Commercials: “Are you in Good Hands?”

Propaganda Techniques 2. Bandwagon The mentality that everyone is doing this, or everyone supports this cause/person, so you should too It tries to show that once you do this, you will have a lot of fun or gain a lot of advantages from this Example: “America’s largest network!”

Propaganda Techniques 3. Celebrity Testimonial *Celebrity endorsement of a philosophy, movement, candidate or product Causes more people to become supporters because they tend to trust the celebrity Example:

Propaganda Techniques 4. Plain Folk When a candidate or cause is identified with common people from everyday walks of life helps people relate to the candidate Example: “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” TV Show

Propaganda Techniques 5. Emotional Appeal Argument or plea that appeals to people’s emotions in order to cause a strong emotional reaction Example: Starving children commercials, animals in need, etc

Propaganda Techniques 6. Repetition Repeating one word or a well-known phrase/logo so that people remember it easily Example: What is being repeated in this ad?

Propaganda Techniques Simple Phrases or Songs Using a catchy phrase (sometimes rhyming) or a song to make the message “stick” in a listener’s head Example: 773-202-LUNA! “Do a Dollup!”

Propaganda Techniques 7. Fear Presenting a dreaded circumstance and then present the kind of behavior needed to avoid that horrible event Example:

Propaganda Techniques 8. Finger Pointing/Pinpointing the Enemy Pointing out flaws in a competitor in order to make the “favored” person look better Example:
