Japan Previously isolated (1600-1854). Commodore Matthew Perry (black ships) arrives in 1853 under orders from U.S. President Millard Fillmore to open Japan to trade. Treaty of Kanagawa- opens Japan to world trade Decline of samurai, rapid modernization

Japan New Emperor (Emperor Mutsuhito) comes to power-taking away power from Shoguns- starting the Meiji Era (1868-1912). Meiji Restoration reforms- abolished feudalism, equality before the law, establish constitutional monarchy, modern military created, established a postal service, new education system, promoted industrialization including a railroad network

Japan Key economic markets included tea, silk, weaponry, shipbuilding, sake Increased agricultural taxes Japanese Imperialism- defeats China in Sino-Japanese War (1895) Japan adds Taiwan. Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) defeats Russia, gains Korea.

Italy, Prussia Count Camillo di Cavour and Giuseppe Garibaldi help to unify Italy into a new country in 1861. Otto Von Bismarck (Blood and Iron) Prussian prime Minister (Germany unifies in 1871) who uses industrialism, militarism and nationalism to make Prussia a powerful country. France defeated in the Franco-Prussian war 1871.
