Applications of classical conditioning Classical conditioning is used to get over fear Two methods of reducing fears are based on the principle of extinction- flooding and systematic desensitization Applications of classical conditioning
Flooding- person is exposed to the harmless stimulus until fear responses to that stimulus are extinguished Ex- fear of snakes; person put in a room with lots of harmless snakes Usually effective-but very unpleasant
Systematic desensitization- people are taught relaxation techniques and then exposed gradually to stimuli they fear while relaxed Teach them how to cope Gradual process
Counter conditioning- pleasant stimulus paired repeatedly with a fearful one- counteracting the fear
