Activating Prior Knowledge Learning Objective We will identify what a special place is and what makes it special. Activating Prior Knowledge As I click, imagine you are at these places. How would they make you feel? Think about what you might see, hear, feel, smell or be able to touch. Special Places

Concept Development What is a special place? Individuals1 and groups of people can have special places that they go to for different reasons. Refer to Teacher Dialogue It could be a place visited by lots of people. It could be a place inside. It could be a place outside. What is a special place? It could be a big area. It could be a place only you know about. It could be a small space. Vocabulary 1 just one person 5

What makes a place special? Concept Development Individuals and groups of people can have special places that they go to for different reasons. Something may have happened there that makes you remember an important time. The things you do there make it a special place to be. What makes a place special? Pair Share Tell your partner about a special place that you like to go to or spend time at. Being there might help you to feel calm and forget about things that have made you sad. Being there might make you feel happy and relaxed. 6

Patrick’s Special Place Guided Practice Individuals and groups of people can have special places that they go to for different reasons. Patrick’s Special Place Patrick’s special place is the waterfall near where he lives. This place reminds him of where his dad taught him to swim. He loves to spend time at the waterfall with people in his kinship group. It’s a place to relax and he loves the rushing sound of the waterfall. The smell of the fresh, clean water and the feeling of being in a big open space makes this a very happy place to be. 7

This is a place where Tamara feels calm. Her bedroom is a quiet place and she can spend some time alone there. She likes to keep certain things in her room that mean a lot to her. They can be put away and kept safe. Tamara loves her special place and the way it makes her feel. 9

It is important to understand that people have special places that they like to go to for different reasons. We should respect places that are special to other people as well as our own special places. Whether it is the memories, the sights or smells, or the things that you can do there, a special place should be a place that makes you feel good in some way. 12

Portfolio Item Effective Feedback Walk around as students are completing their worksheet. Give specific praise and feedback about their ideas and drawing. 14
