Presentation transcript:

MARINE SCIENCE What is Marine Science? It is the study of living organisms and their relationship to the chemical, physical and geological nature of the ocean. It has two main divisions.

Marine Biology and Oceanography____________ study of the living organisms in the ocean and the environments in which they live living organisms’ taxa characteristics of growth food web interactions niche (producer, consumer, decomposer) habitat – where it lives ecosystem – where & who it lives with study of the physical property of the ocean tides, waves, currents temperature, salinity, pressure ocean floor geology water chemistry substrate areas: - engineering - archaeology areas: - military - veterinary medicine - resource management - meteorology - aquaculture - energy & resource management - education - behavior/psychology

WHY STUDY MARINE SCIENCE? 71% of our planet is covered by oceans 90% of the world’s population lives within 50 miles of the shore Food source Energy resources Medical resources Knowledge It is cool!
