Why did the U.S. build roads & canals in the early 1800s? To improve transportation for westward settlement & speed up the flow of goods to improve business ($$$) Roads: Turnpikes: Toll roads built by private companies. Corduroy Road: A road made out of logs. National Road: Funded by Congress. Completed in 1818. Went from Maryland to Illinois eventually. Canal: is a channel dug by people, then filled with water to allow boats to cross a stretch of land.
