Exploring Pictographs… On your paper, tell me about what you did over the summer, but use pictures only – no words! Use three pictures to tell your summer adventures. Make sure you don’t discuss with anyone  Take five minutes to draw three images. Don’t make them too fancy or detailed.

Exploring Pictographs… Trade papers with someone in your group. Take a moment to review their pictures. Underneath each picture, write a sentence describing what you think the picture is showing.

Exploring Pictographs… Did anyone guess all three pictures correctly? Did anyone have no idea what your partner drew?

Exploring Pictographs… Native American pictographs can be difficult to translate accurately, as pictures can be interpreted in different ways. Most of the stories have been saved by oral tradition, but we’re unsure of how much the stories have changed over the years. Remember the telephone game? It’s a bit like that.

Exploring Pictographs… Today, we’re going to look at pictographs that tell the story of Walum Olum, a Lenape tribe creation myth. We’re going to see how close you guys can get to the actual myth 

Exploring Pictographs… Look at the pictographs on your page titles “Native American Story Time.” These pictographs are an excerpt of a creation myth we’re going to read today. Next, work with your group to write at least 1-2 sentences explaining what each pictograph represents. Make sure your explanations make a story that flows from one image to the other. Be prepared to share 

Exploring Pictographs… Next, let’s share. Yes, each group needs to share. Choose two people from your group to come up to the board. One person will read the story, and the other person will click on the Smartboard every time your group’s story moves to the next symbol. Remember, every time the class is disrespectful to the presenter, we will stay after for one minute. Oh no!

Walum Olum Next, let’s read the real story. As we read, consider: Which group was the closest? After we’ve read, respond to the prompt below: Remember, creation myths are meant to teach morals – what is right and what is wrong. What is a moral that you think the Lenape tribe was trying to teach in Walum Olum? Explain your answer and use textual evidence to support your response.
