Multiplication and Division Times tables: multiplication and division facts Objectives Day 1 Know multiplication and division facts for the 9 times table. Day 2 Begin to know multiplication and division facts for the 7 times table. Day 3 Know the 11 and 12 times tables. Before teaching, be aware that: On Day 1 and Day 2 you can also use the ‘Number Grid’ ITP to explore the patterns shown here in screenshot. On Day 3 children will need mini-whiteboards and pens. Multiplication and Division Times tables: multiplication and division facts Starter Division facts for the 6 times table Pre-requisite skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 1 Children choose six numbers from 1 to 12 to write in a 3 × 2 grid. Shuffle a set of multiples of 6 cards (6 to 72) and show one. Children think how many 6s are in this number and ring the answer if they have it. Encourage them to count up in 6s on their fingers if they do not know the fact by heart. Repeat until at least one child rings all their numbers. Year 4

Multiplication and Division Times tables: multiplication and division facts Starter Multiplication and division facts Pre-requisite skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 2 Draw the triangle on the board; Ask children to work in pairs to write four number sentences that use all three numbers: two multiplications and two divisions, i.e. 9 × 4 = 36, 4 × 9 = 36, 36 ÷ 9 = 4 and 36 ÷ 4 = 9. Repeat for other triangles, e.g. 48, 6 and 8; 48, 12 and 4; 42, 6 and 7. Year 4

Children work in pairs, one child multiplies the number by 9 (using the finger trick if necessary - see whole-class teaching unit Day 1); the other child by 90. Year 4

Day 1: Know multiplication and division facts for the 9 times table. We can use our hands to show the 9 times table! You have 1 thumb standing up before the folded down finger, and 8 fingers after it, 1 ten and 8 ones making 18. That’s two 9s! Hold out your hands, with palms facing toward you. Fold down the second finger from the left (including thumb). Put your second finger back up and fold down your third finger. This gives the answer to three 9s, can you see it? Put your third finger back up and fold down your fourth finger. This gives the answer to four 9s! Carry on and find 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 nines. Year 4

Day 3: Know the 11 and 12 times tables. 1 × 11 = 11 Let’s look at the 11× table. 2 × 11 = 22 3 × 11 = 33 Copy onto your whiteboard and continue up to 12 × 11. 4 × 11 = 44 5 × 11 = 55 6 × 11 = 66 7 × 11 = 77 Let’s check… 8 × 11 = 88 9 × 11 = 99 Did any patterns help you? 10 × 11 = 110 If we know 10 × 11 = 110 we can add 11 to find 11 × 11 and then 11 more to find 12 × 11. 11 × 11 = 121 12 × 11 = 132 Year 4

Day 3: Know the 11 and 12 times tables. There’s a trick for 12 × 11. Add the digits in 12. 1 + 2 = 3 so we put 3 between the 1 and 2 of 12 to get 132! 10 × 11 = 110 11 × 11 = 121 12 × 11 = 132 13 × 11 = 143 Try 13 × 11. Add the digits in 13. 1 + 3 = 4. Place 4 between the 1 and the 3 to get 143. 14 × 11 = 154 15 × 11 = 165 16 × 11 = 176 17 × 11 = 187 18 × 11 = 198 Try 14 × 11 and continue on to 18 × 11. Let’s check those... Year 4

Try the others like that. Day 3: Know the 11 and 12 times tables. 1 × 12 = 12 Let’s try the 12× table. We can add 12 each time… 2 × 12 = 24 3 × 12 = 36 4 × 12 = 48 …or can use our 10s and 2s. 5 × 12 = 60 6 × 12 = 72 7 × 12 = 84 8 × 12 = 96 For example, 7 × 12. We know 7 × 10 = 70 and 7 × 2 = 14 so 7 × 12 = 70 + 14 = 84. 9 × 12 = 108 10 × 12 = 120 11 × 12 = 132 Children can now go on to do differentiated GROUP ACTIVITIES.
