Antony van leeuwenhoek Leeuwenhoek is from the Netherlands Discovered bacteria Did not fully understand what they are 1674

Discovered chlorine Later used for disinfecting 1774 Carl Wilhelm Scheele Discovered chlorine Later used for disinfecting 1774

Ignac Semmelweis Semmelweis is from Austria Find that if doctors wash their hands between patients It protects patients from infections 1847

Joseph Lister Lister was a surgeon from England First uses antiseptics during surgery Uses it to disinfect wounds 1867

Louis Pasteur Pasteur from France Develops a vaccine Supports his theory that germs cause disease 1879

Marie curie Marie Curie is born in Poland in 1867. She is the first person to use the term “radioactive”. In 1898, she discovers two radioactive substances which will be later used for medical purposes. She wins the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903.

Research Research scientific discoveries that have helped to keep us safe. Pick one of the people listed above in this presentation and find out more details about their life. If you find other men or women who have made contributions to medical history, come and ask me if you can do a research report about him or her. Students should write a biographical paragraph of 8-12 sentences (minimum) about their chosen medical researcher giving important details about their life and about their medical contributions.
