AR: Helpful Hints Quizzes may NOT be taken at home. Set up an email alert on AR Home Connect. AR Diagnostics will be taken at the beginning of each quarter to assess student progress. ASK YOUR CHILD…Have you taken an AR Quiz lately? How did you do? Students should be taking quizzes every 2-3 weeks. Students should be reading 3-4 books a Qtr. If your student is only reading books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, etc., then the reality is that they’re not going to get the rich vocabulary they need as they progress through school. Reading ought to be fun and my sincere desire is that students walk away with a genuine joy for reading. However, as their teacher I they need to read challenging texts. As for the vocabulary, your student is going to get vocab. words and HW but not 12 new words a day. They’re going to have to get their through their own reading.

Important Reading Statistics Out-of-school reading habits of students have shown that 15 minutes a day of independent reading exposes students to more than 1,000,000 words of text in a year. Literate high school graduates need to know about 60,000 words; therefore, students need to learn an average of 12 new words a day. Better readers read more. By 5th grade, good readers read an estimated 10 times an many words a day as poor readers. BOTTOM LINE: encourage your student to READ If your student is only reading books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, etc., then the reality is that they’re not going to get the rich vocabulary they need as they progress through school. Reading ought to be fun and my sincere desire is that students walk away with a genuine joy for reading. However, as their teacher I they need to read challenging texts. As for the vocabulary, your student is going to get vocab. words and HW but not 12 new words a day. They’re going to have to get their through their own reading.
