The Monkey’s Paw By W. W. Jacobs Jacobs was an English author who wrote this famous short story in London in 1902. The setting reflects the English countryside and the early industrial time period during the 1900s. The story also refers to India, a colony of Great Britain during this time in history.

Vocabulary The Monkey’s Paw Talisman - an object, typically an inscribed ring or stone, that is thought to have magic powers and to bring good luck. synonyms: lucky charm, amulet, mascot, totem Fakir - a person who sells charms or magic potions, and sets spells on people or objects. In this story the fakir is from India. Pounds - in England, the paper currency is called the pound. In the U. S. the currency is the dollar. The story tells of £200 , or 200 pounds.
