Chapter 25.1-Beginnings of Industrialization Student Objectives: Analyze why the Industrial Revolution began in Britain Explain key inventions that progressed the IR Identify transportation improvements and the impact of railroads on British industry
Beginning the IR 1700s-beginning of Industrial Revolution Began with agricultural revolution Large landowners bought huge amounts of land Led to enclosures Higher crop yields Forced small farmers to move to cities Jethro Tull (seed drill) Crop rotation (maximize crop output and restore nutrients) Improvements in livestock Think about the revolutions we have learned thus far in this course (ie French Revolution). Based on this, as well as the word industry, what do you think was what happened during the Industrial Revolution? What is the purpose of crop rotation? How did this, as well as the seed drill and improvements in livestock lead to a different standard of living? Was it better or worse than before? Why?
Why Britain? Population growth Natural resources Trade and economy Political stability All factors of production What are some reasons why the population may have grown based on the last slide? Based on the IR and last slide, what occupation do you think this large population was involved with? Based on the idea of industrialization, what do you think are some natural resources that are necessary to be successful? What were the four factors of production needed for the industrialization?
1. What are entrepreneurs 1. What are entrepreneurs? Have you heard of this term before or know someone today that is an entrepreneur?
New Inventions Major inventions in textiles Flying Shuttle & Spinning Jenny Power Loom/Water Power Birth of factories Cotton & Cotton Gin What are textiles? Based on power source, where do you think the first factories were built? Based on the pictures, what are some thoughts you have on these machines? How are these inventions and new ways of industrialization changing peoples’ lives in the 1800s?
Transportation/Railroads Original steam engines Heavy and fuel issue James Watt steam engine Steamboat/Canals Road improvements Steam-driven locomotives Effects of railroads Transporting goods New jobs Transportation/moving of people How did all these major goods run? What were the major effects of railroads and other forms of transportation? How were people’ lives changing for the positive in the industrial revolution? What could be some possible negatives of this new industrial growth?
