Water never leaves the Earth Water never leaves the Earth. It is constantly being cycled through the atmosphere, ocean, and land. This process, known as the water cycle, is driven by energy from the sun. The water cycle is crucial to the existence of life on our planet.

Georgia Performance Standards S4E3. Students will differentiate between the states of water and how they relate to the water cycle and weather. d. Explain the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, and precipitation). S4CS4. Students will use ideas of system, model, change, and scale in exploring scientific and technological matters. d. Use geometric figures, number sequences, graphs, diagrams, sketches, number lines, maps, and stories to represent corresponding features of objects, events, and processes in the real world. Identify ways in which the representations do not match their original counterparts.

Misconceptions Proper Conceptions The water cycle involves freezing and melting of water. Water only gets evaporated from the ocean or lakes. The water cycle involves liquid water being evaporated, water vapor condensing to form rain or snow in the clouds which falls to the earth. Water can evaporate from plants, animals, puddles and the ground in addition to bodies of water.

ENGAGE Page Keeley Probe-Where Did the Water Come From? Project probe on the board and let students go to designated place in the room for their best answer to which describes where the puddle of water came from. Let students discuss with their peers as to why they picked their answer. Have students draw a diagram on a piece of paper labeled before/after/different . Instruct them to make a diagram of the water cycle with pictures and words of what they think the water cycle is about.

EXPLORE The Incredible Journey Objectives Students will: describe the movement of water within the water cycle. identify the states of water as it moves through the water cycle. http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/blog/experiment-of-the-week/learn-the-water-cycle-through-an-interactive-game/#more-9872

EXPLAIN Have students take notes in their interactive journals on water cycle- Use document camera. Students will also add new vocabulary with pictures to their interactive journals

EXTEND Read A Drop Around the World by Barbara Shaw McKinney. Click on book to get presentation of book thru Amazon Read A Drop Around the World by Barbara Shaw McKinney. Have students write a story in their interactive journal about their water drops journey.

EVALUATE Formative Assessment Task Card Game-Give students the blank answer sheet and let them go around the room answering the questions on the task cards that are placed around the room. When done the answer sheet will get filled in together and any questions can be answered. This would be a great review activity. Summative Assessment Students will add the after picture to the journal entry in their interactive journals demonstrating their understanding of their water cycle. They will also add the differences they see from their before picture to their after picture. The students will take a picture of this document and add it to padlet.
