2007 Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness January 2008

Brief History of CCSSE Established in 2001 – project of the Community College Leadership Program at the University of Texas in Austin Supported by major grants Houston Endowment Lumina Foundation for Education MetLife Foundation Pew Charitable Trusts Works in partnership with NSSE

First Five Years Over 700,000 students 548 different colleges 48 states 25 states use CCSSE statewide

What is Engagement and Who is Responsible? Students AND? Institutions – JJC Focus on student behaviors and institutional practices that promote student engagement

Why Focus on Student Engagement? The research says so! The more actively involved students are with: Faculty Staff Other Students Subject matter being learned We are not measuring learning, but there is a direct correlation between engagement and learning. The more likely to persist – Success!!!

CCSSE: A Tool for Improvement and Accountability CCSSE helps us: Assess quality in our college Identify and learn from good educational practice – those which promote high levels of student learning and retention Identify areas in which we can improve – both programs and services for students

Five Lessons Already Learned Be intentional

Five Lessons Already Learned Engagement matters for all students but matters more for some than others

Five Lessons Already Learned Part-time students and faculty are the reality of community colleges – and typically are not adequately addressed in improvement efforts

Five Lessons Already Learned Data are our friends Or Data is our friend

Five Lessons Already Learned Look behind the numbers

Questions to Think About What can you do to improve student engagement/learning your area of responsibility? (Or across departments/divisions) What one question would/should you/we ask a student in regard to their responses to CCSSE? Strategies?

Readings Involvement in Learning (1984) report sponsored by the National Institute of Education Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education (1987), Chickering and Gamson How College Affects Students (1991), Pascarella and Terenzini Leaving College (1993), Tinto
