MT: Male Reproductive System Structure and Fxn of the Male Accessory Reproductive Glands (seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and bulbourethral gland) MT: Male Reproductive System

Structure of Seminal Vesicles coiled pouches lie along the lower part of the posterior surface of the bladder are directly in front of the rectum how well it functions depends on the amount of testosterone

Fxn of Seminal Vesicles secrete an alkaline, viscous liquid (rich in fructose) that makes up part of the semen

Structure of Prostate Gland gland that lies below the bladder shaped like a donut with the urethra going through the center of the donut Enlarged prostate constricts urine flow

Fxn of Prostate Gland Secretes a thin alkaline substance that makes up 31% of semen Alkalinity helps protect the sperm from acid in the urethra and vagina

Structure of Bulbourethral Gland AKA Cowper’s Gland small round gland resembling a pea located below the prostate

Fxn of Bulbourethral Gland Secretes mucous to lubricate the urethra Secretes alkaline fluid to protect sperm

Prostate Cancer 32,000 men die/year If large enough, tumor can be felt through rectal exam Early detection is best Screening is most effective with rectal exam and a blood test looking for PSA (prostate specific antigen)
