KS2 SATS 2016

SATs Week beginning Monday 9th May In the summer term of 2016, children Year 6 will be the first to take the new SATs papers. These tests in English and maths will reflect the new national curriculum.

At the end of Year 6, children will sit tests in: Reading Spelling, punctuation and grammar Maths These tests will be both set and marked externally, and the results will be used to measure the school’s performance (for example, through reporting to Ofsted and published league tables).

SATs timetable Date Tests Monday 9th May Reading Tuesday 10th May Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Wednesday 11th May Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic), Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning) Thursday 12th May Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning)

Reading Three to four separate texts on any subject, with an emphasis on fiction Each section has a list of questions to answer There are 4 main types of questions on the reading paper literal, deductive, inferential and authorial intent.

How best can you support your child in reading? Ensure your child reads every night Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction Try to ask them questions about the text Help them with the different skills of reading - especially ‘skim’ reading, where they are looking for key words in the text Build their reading stamina

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers and lasting 45 minutes, and a spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes.

How best can you support your child with SPaG? Again, reading a variety of texts – the more children read, the more familiar they become with different text types Spelling homework – this focuses on spelling lists/rules Encouraging your child to complete all homework and discussing their work with them

Maths Children will sit three papers in maths: Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes Children have to answer calculations Papers 2 and 3: mathematical fluency, solving problems and reasoning, 40 minutes per paper Children will answer a number of question types, including multiple choice, true or false, constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart, and less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem.

How best can you support your child with maths? Basics – tables, place value, four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), estimating answers, maths vocabulary, problem solving Encourage careful reading of questions and checking of answers in homework Booster classes – for those children whom we feel need a little extra help to achieve the next level Revision websites, CPG revision books, maths games

Writing Writing composition will be subject to teacher assessment.

Science Not all children in Year 6 will take science SATs - a number of schools will be required to take part in science sampling. This will take place from 6th to 17th June and we will let you know if Worcesters is selected.

Home support The best help is interest taken in learning and progress. Supporting homework. Good communication between the school and home. Getting a good sleep on a school night! Ensuring attendance at school from now until SATs – every day. A healthy breakfast.

During SATs week: Please ensure that your child is in school every day during SATs week. Ensure that they are in school on time Please don’t book anything during school time, e.g. doctor’s appointments, holidays, etc. If your child is ill, let us know immediately

Scores The existing national curriculum levels are being scrapped, and instead children will be given standardised scores. You will be given your child’s score, alongside the average for their school, the local area and nationally.  There will also be a ‘performance descriptor’ of the expected standard for Key Stage 2 pupils. The Department for Education is aiming for 65 per cent of children to reach or exceed that standard.
