Guide to Creative Writing Your work will be marked using the following codes in order to help you correct your mistakes. The best pieces of work will have considered these common errors before handing in. GCA Gender/Case/Agreement If something is the subject or your sentence (doing the verb) then using the nominative case. If it is the object of the sentence then use the accusative case. If a noun comes after MIT, NEBEN, VOR, VON, IN, ZWISCHEN, GEGENUEBER, NACH, HINTER or UNTER then use the dative case. To find out a word’s gender, consider its meaning and its appearance. if this doesn’t tell you, then use a dictionary. P Punctuation Commas not needed after sentence openers, like we’d have in English – instead, it’s a B-clause (swap verb and person). eg: Last Saturday, I went fishing Letzten Samstag bin ich angeln gegangen Otherwise, usual sentence punctuation applies – capitals at start, full stops at end etc. S Spelling Be careful of common errors ie sounds like eeeee ei sounds like eye Are any of the words you’re spelling incorrectly in the instructions? Can you use any of the words in the instructions to avoid making unnecessary mistakes? SCC Special Character/Capital Only 3 letters can have umlauts – a, o and u but the umlaut represents an e after the umlauted letter, so ä can be written as ae if you like. All nouns have capitals regardless whether proper nouns or not. ß can be replaced by ss if you like. U Unclear Seriously consider whether you’re communicating your message in the simplest way before you write it. If you don’t know how to say what you want to say, can you reword it in to something easier to communicate in German? Can you lie instead? Making sense is much more important than telling the truth in your written work. VC Verb Conjugation Remember that verbs about ICH tend to end with E. When it’s someone else, it tends to be T and plurals tend to be EN. WM Word Missing Have you got both your verbs if referring to the past or future? There has to be 2. Have you re-read your work to check that it reads it properly. It’s quite common to miss out little words – ie ich bin Stadt gegangen but they make your work read badly (I went town). A critical check is usually enough. WO Word Order After UND, ABER, ODER and DENN you can carry on using word order like English. When using a word like JEDOCH, TROTZDEM, ALSO, DAHER or any WHEN or WHERE, you must have your verb before your person. After words like WEIL, DA, OBWOHL, WANN your verb has to be at the end. Verbs can not be next to each other – if there re two verbs in a clause, the second is always at the end. WT Wrong Tense Take care not to mix tenses – GE- words only get used in the past. Only use HABE if you mean HAVE or if using the perfect tense. WW Wrong Word No English allowed and beware of false friends which you may hope mean one thing but mean another (also = therefore, fast = almost, dann = then etc)
