OIL

How is oil formed? Oil is formed when tiny plants and animals that lived in the oceans die, sink to the ocean floor, and over time through compression from heat and weight turn in to oil. Plate Tectonics also plays a role as the movement of earth’s crust creates pockets where oil can form.

Why is so much oil in Southwest Asia? Southwest Asia was under water at one time. The conditions in the area are just right for oil to form.

Oil is NOT distributed Equally! In Southwest Asia the distribution of oil is uneven. Some countries are large and have little oil; some countries are small and have lots of oil.

Reading Jigsaw You will be assigned to a group. Each group will have a different reading assignment and questions to answer. At the end of class you must share what you read and the answers to your questions with the rest of the class.

Reading Assignments Group 1: Section 24.4 “Oil Has Made Many People Better Off” Question: 1 Group 2: 24.4 “Per Capita GDP Does Not Tell the Whole Story” Question: 2 Group 3: 24.4 “Oil Has not Improved Life for All” Question: 3 Group 4: 24.5 “Oil Exporting Countries-Working to Control Price” Question: 4 Group 5: 24.5 “Oil Importing Countries-Working to Control Flow” Question: 5 Group 6: 24. 7 “ Global Connections” Question 6, 7, 8
