What caused world war I? Remember the acronym: M.A.N.I.A. Long-term causes: Militarism Alliances Nationalism Imperialism Immediate cause: Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungry Remember the acronym: M.A.N.I.A.

Causes Alliances Militarism Build up of weapons/militaries in Europe An agreement in which an attack on one country was an attack on all countries It’s the “buddy system” in war

Causes Nationalism Imperialism Extreme pride on one’s country or nation Competition for overseas empires Stronger nations taking over weaker nations

Who was assassinated? Archduke Franz Ferdinand He was the heir to the Austria-Hungary throne He was shot and killed by a Serbian nationalist

Who does most of the fighting? Allies Central Powers France, Russia (until 1917), Italy, Great Britain, US (1917) Germany, Ottoman Empire (Turkey), Austria-Hungary

Effects of the war on U.S. Workforce What was the GREAT MIGRATION? How were WOMEN impacted? What was the role of NATIONAL WAR LABOR BOARD? Movement of African American from the South to the North & West caused by available factory jobs during the war. WOMEN TOOK ON NEW ROLES IN FACTORIES AND TOOK JOBS OVERSEAS AS NURSES, TELEPHONE OPERATORS, AND TYPISTS. HELPED WORKERS AND MANAGEMENT AVOID STRIKES AND REACH AGREEMENTS DURING THE WAR.

RESULTS OF THE WAR In what ways did the TREATY OF VERSAILLES harshly punish Germany? What was the RED SCARE fear of and who were targeted? The LEAGUE OF NATIONS is formed by why does the U.S. not join? Took away their land, reduced the army to almost nothing, had to take full blame for the war, and pay $33 billion in reparations. Fear in the U.S. that America would fall to communism Became suspicious of immigrants Congress doesn’t approve joining it because it will get the U.S. involved in more world problems. It was President Woodrow Wilson’s idea, but Congress still rejected it!
