Introduction “DON’T BE THE BF THAT LOOKS FOR THE FB!!!”

Requirements An assistant. A good light source. Excision set + suturing material. Local anaesthetic e.g. 1% lignocaine. Sterile draping. 4x 23G sterile needles. X-ray screen if available (for radio opaque FB’s only.

Technique Anaesthetize the area. Insert the needles from 4 sides, (north, south, east & west) converging the tips onto the foreign body. The tips should touch the FB. Only now you may reach for the scalpel!!! Dissect down to the FB. Remove the FB and suture the wound.

Conclusion It may be necessary to remove the FB under GA and a bloodless field. The principles for removal are then the same as when done under local anesthesia. Don’t do more damage than leaving the FB would have done.
