Background Study Design Materials & Methods Results Setting & Subjects Management of obesity in primary care using the Eating Behavior Questionnaire (EBQ)(1) and current obesity pharmacotherapy Mohammed Tarrabain, MD Family Medicine & Obesity Medicine (double board certified) Background Study Design Materials & Methods Results Brief counseling on diet and activity was provided by the physician as per current practice guidelines.(3) Weight loss medications were prescribed at an early stage of treatment for majority of patients. A baseline EBQ score was obtained before starting the medication (Adipex, Belviq, or Qsymia). The EBQ was repeated on follow up visits during the treatment duration of six months. 58 patients completed 6 mo. Significant wt. loss achieved in 89.65% (success rate) av. wt. lost = 29.54 lbs. av. % wt. change = 11.62%. 47 patients (83.9%) used medication. 18 patients (66.6%) had and abnormal initial EBQ score. 24 (88.8%) had a normal 6 mo. repeat EBQ score. Initial EBQ abnormal and 6mo repeat EBQ normal observed in 14 patients (51.8%) who achieved significant wt. loss with medication. FDA approved weight loss medications are currently prescribed in the primary care setting. The current practice guidelines do not make any specific recommendations on these medications other than weight goals and drug tolerability. From a clinical perspective, the weight loss induced by such anti-obesity drugs is preceded by changes in eating behavior. No clinical tool exists that can be used for assessment of treatment effect on such behaviors during various stages of weight loss with or without pharmacotherapy. The Eating Behavior Questionnaire (EBQ) (1) has been proposed to be such tool when used in a specialized weight loss clinic.(2) Retrospective observational. Setting & Subjects Westfield Primary Care - St. Vincent Medical Group Carmel, Indiana, USA. Overweight and obese adult cases of Dr. Tarrabain seen March to September 2014. Patient total number= 85, av. age 43.3 yrs. (22 - 75), 58.8% female. av. initial wt. 249.4 lbs. (155 - 723) av. BMI 37.6 (27 - 88) (1) The Eating Behavior Questionnaire: A Novel Clinical Examination.
