APIC text online and review: Study for Certification

The changing paradigm of infectious disease prevention Deadliest Enemy: Our war against killer germs by Dr Michael Osterholm Contact Isolation for Endemic pathogens (MRSA &VRE) universal vs selective isolation by Dr Gonzalo Martin Llorens Beaman Advance in Infectious Disease Diagnostics by Dr Thomas Kim.

Deadliest Enemy: Our war against killer germs Urbanization of African Countries of Potential Concern • Kinshasa, DRC/Brazzaville, RC – 13.8 million (four other cities > 1 million) • Lagos, Nigeria – 13.2 million (five other cities > 1 million) • Nairobi, Kenya – 4.1 million • Acura, Ghana – 2.8 million • Monrovia/Freetown/Conakry – 4.2 million

Infectious Diseases and a Global Crisis Agenda • Priority 1: Influenza, influenza, and influenza • Priority 2: Antimicrobial resistance • Priority 3: Vaccines and diseases of critical regional importance • Priority 4: Mosquitoes, mosquitoes, and mosquitoes • Priority 5: Bioterrorism • Priority 6: Gain of function/dual use research of concern • Priority 7: HIV, TB, and Malaria • Priority 8: Climate change • Priority 9: One Health

From 2014, the organization for Animal Health, or OIE has been notified of 41 H5 and H7 outbreaks in birds involving over 7 viruses in 20 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Middle East. Several are novel viruses that have emerged and spread in wild birds or poultry only in the past few years.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) published strategy for Universal Flu vaccine in Journal of Infectious Diseases February 2018. On February 15, 2018, US senators proposed a law that would invest $1billion towards universal flu vaccine.

Drug- Resistant Infections

Estimated Annual Antimicrobial Use In the United States and China • 4,000 tons for human use • 14,000 tons for animal use China • 81,000 tons for human use • 98,000 tons for animal use • 88,000 tons for export use in animals

Hand Hygiene is the cornerstone of any infection prevention strategy Infection prevention Approaches Vertical: Interventions focused at a single pathogen. Detecting and isolating Specific pathogens Horizontal: Multi-focus interventions aimed at reducing risk from all pathogens transmitted in the same mechanism. Hand hygiene, Chlorhexidine bathing, Central line bundle, universal gloving, and appropriate application of contact isolation.
