Bud, Not Buddy Historical Overview

Historical Fiction The genre of Bud, Not Buddy is historical fiction. This means that the characters are NOT real, but the events that are taking place DID happen. This book covers racism, segregation, stock market crash, and the Great Depression. These events ARE REAL.

The great depression What is the Great Depression? It began when the stock market crashed in 1929. Some of the causes of The Great Depression were drought, overproduction of goods, bank failures, and consumer debt. What did the Great Depression do to the people? Many people lost their jobs, became homeless, and struggled to find food. What ended the Great Depression? The beginning of World War II ended the Great Depression.

What is the stock market? A place where stocks and bonds are traded and sold. Stocks are units of ownership in a company. Who was president at the time? Herbert Hoover He started several programs to help better the economic pain and get the country's businesses going again.

In this book, Bud (fictional character) lived in Flint, Michigan during the Great Depression. Flint, Michigan is a real city. The Great Depression DID happen. During the book, he struggles with racism, segregation, and finding a foster home. What is a foster home? A way of providing a family & home life for children who cannot live with their own parents.

Hoovervilles Hoovervilles are small towns built by unemployed and poor people during the Depression of the early 1930s. Hooverville was named after President Hoover. What is segregation? Segregation is when Caucasian men & women were separated from African American men & women. They had separate schools, churches, water fountains, food halls, and even bathrooms. Throughout the book, Bud will struggle with segregation.

What is racism? Racism is discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s race is better than others.
