Objectives: Main components: Adaptive vocational training and employment for young people with disabilities 1998-2005: Hai Duong, Quang Nam, Da Nang 2006-2008: Ninh Binh, Quang Nam Objectives: - PWD are enable to address their own vocational, economic and psycho-social needs. PWD profit from meaningful employment & self employment opportunities. Main components: - Awareness raising - Vocational training and employment Supporting network Support policy enforcement

PWD, at-risk youth Psychology, Characters, Abilities and Capacities, Rights and Duties, VT & E, Opportunities for personal development, Policies, etc. Their Families PWD’s Characters and Abilities, VT & E, How to help and support PWD, Policies, etc. Businesses PWD’s Psychology, Characters, Abilities and Capacities, How to work with PWD, Businesses’ social responsibilities, Advantages in PWD employment, Policies, etc. Local officials PWD’s Rights, PWD’s Abilities&Capacities, Policies, Local officials’ responsibilities etc. Community: local people, schools, community-based organizations, ect. PWD’s Rights, PWD’s Abilities&Capacities, Social Responsibilities, Policies, etc. Local project staff and WCV staff
AR – where, WHEN, how? WHERE? Home, businesses, schools, offices, community, etc. WHEN? Before, During and After the Project (constancy and consistency) HOW? - Social events: contests, meetings, etc. - Project activities: home and business visits, workshops, training courses, exchange visits, outdoor activities, etc. - Mass media: TV, radio, newspapers (events, articles from local people, etc.) - Pamphlets, case stories, pictures - Cooperation with other organizations: films, books, articles, etc. …
LESSONS LEARNT Mobilize local resources and assets Diversify and combine all types of AR activities in the community Seeing is believing. (One of the most effective ways to improve awareness of the local people: to see and directly communicate with successful PWD and/or at-risk youth in the community.) Words and Deeds Organizational and personal -There is still plenty of room for improvement in this type of program. -Determining how to involve PWD as advocates is a significant challenge we desire to see addressed. -Though many of the local communities have pockets of greater awareness. The general population is still largely ignorant of the potential of PWD. -The challenges of working closely with PWD are significant. And if more focused effort is put into helping businesses there could be greater success. EXAMPLE: many business owners still do not understand how to do workplace adaptation for the unique needs of each disabled person. And adaptation is not just physical change but also change in training style, work practices and attitude.
