Professional Learning for the e-Learning Context Lori Stryker, Ministry of Education

Investigate: Where are teachers in their current understanding of: Curriculum? Assessment? Technology? What do teachers need to learn? How can you provide that learning? What will that learning look like? How will you measure the learning?

Model what you are learning: Learning Goal: In this session we are learning how to provide the supporting conditions teachers need to advance their understanding and practice in assessment in an online environment so that students have the opportunities necessary to succeed in the course. Success Criteria: I can identify the key conditions for professional learning in the model presented. I can develop my own plan for guiding professional learning in my own context.

Start with a good question: Teachers were asked to set their own learning goals for the session. They were given a ‘problem’ to solve in a learning team. Teachers collaborate to build accurate knowledge they can use immediately. Make thinking visible: Problem to solve was: What are the relationships between curriculum expectations, tasks and rubrics? Their criteria for success? Explicit, practical, aligned with GS and have to use the terms of GS correctly. They were also asked how their ‘models’ informed their own learning goals.

Build on new Knowledge: ‘Unpack’ the curriculum expectations This will give the language for the learning goals Develop success criteria- the foundation for feedback and all assessment & evaluation!

Go where the learners take you: Student Profiles: Big ideas vs Enduring Understandings vs Framing Questions:

Have a plan to measure learning How will you know that the learning was effective? How will you know that teachers transferred the learning to their teaching? How will you know that students have benefited from this investment in time to learn?

In summary: Investigate the needs of your learners. Model what you are learning. Start with a good question. Build new knowledge together and then use that knowledge. Go where the learners take you- figure it out together or find an expert. Measure the results of the learning. Reflect on its effectiveness.
