Class Vision Vision: Develop as scientists ready for future college and/or career experience by studying the environmental world around you in detail.

Limiting Factors Limiting factors are factors or resources that CONTROL a process such as organism growth, or population growth or distribution For our purposes right now, know that limiting factors affect (limit) population growth

2 Types of Limiting Factors There are two types of limiting factors in regards to population: (Population) Density Independent (Population) Density Dependent Using what you know about population density, write a short definition of what you think these words mean in your own words

2 Types of Limiting Factors There are two types of limiting factors in regards to population: (Population) Density Independent: factors that act independently of population density and affect all individuals more or less equally #populationdensitydoesn’tmatter (Population) Density Dependent: factors that are influenced by population density #populationdensitydoesmatter High density: factors have greater effect Low density: factors have lesser effect

Brainstorm: 1. Density Independent Physical Factors: Make a list of at least 10 physical factors that will affect the population size regardless of population density. Example: Rainfall 2. Density Independent Catastrophic Events: Make a list of at least 10 catastrophic events that will affect the population size of cougars regardless of population density. Example: Hurricane 3. Density Dependent Factors: Make a list of at least 10 factors that would have a greater effect on population size if there is greater population density. Example: Competition

Limiting Factors Group Brainstorm: 1 Limiting Factors Group Brainstorm: 1. QUIETLY collaborate with group members to brainstorm limiting factors 2. Everyone should WRITE down ideas in brainstorm box 3. HYPOTHESIZE in space provided beneath the brainstorm box

Sentence Frames During a class discussion, you will use the following sentence frames to respond to me and your peers. My answer is _____. I got this answer by ____. What you said is ____________________. I agree with _____ because ______. I disagree with _____ because ______.

2.16 Exit Ticket Volume 0 – Complete Sentences What are the two types of limiting factors? How do you decide if a limiting factor is density independent or density dependent? What type of limiting factor is food supply? Explain how you know.
