Problem Definition Project: Integration of Two Separate Biology Databases to process queries that require the knowledge of both. 1. Neuron Image Database(NCMIR) The National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (NCMIR) is a federally funded research facility dedicated to advancing three-dimensional microscopy and imaging of biological materials. (http://www-ncmir.ucsd.edu) 2. Neuron Receptor Database (SenseLab) The SenseLab Project is a 10-year effort by an international network of researchers to develop a comprehensive approach to building integrated, multidisciplinary models of neurons and neural systems, using the olfactory pathway as a model. (http://senselab.med.yale.edu/senselab)

Example Query/Result Deliverables: answer to the User’s Queries. Does hippocampus CA1 pyramidal cell has glutamate receptor and what the effect on the neuron shape caused by the Ca++ ion entered through the glutamate receptor during LTP? Query/Result SYSTEM THAT CAN PROCESS THE QUERY FROM MULTIPLE COMPLEX WORLD DATABASES Deliverables: answer to the User’s Queries. Example: for queries above, the answer is: Yes / Neuron Image-Ids before and after LTP

Project Plan Deliverables Apply Model-based Mediation with Domain Map to to solve the problem Adapt available software to realize some of the subsystems, e.g., XML-Wrapper Try to implement a CM-Wrapper Use RDF or XML Schema with F-logic as a GCM Use expert knowledge to construct the domain map Use Description Logic to formalize the domain map Deliverables A detailed written project report that describes the design and the implementation of the solution to the problem Presentation of the design and the implementation
