Columbian Exchange

New world foods help make lives healthier and longer for the Old World Goods from the old world (Europe, Asia, and Africa) are brought into the new world (North and South America) Old world animals help transform the new world and its native inhabitants Diseases are credited with ~90% destruction of Native peoples New world foods help make lives healthier and longer for the Old World Corn, Potatoes, Tomatoes to name a few.

II. Triangle Trade

Manufactured goods are traded from Europe to Africa and the Americas Precious Metals and enslaved Africans are traded from Africa to Europe and the Americas Raw Materials and foodstuffs are traded from the Americas to Europe and Africa

III. Middle Passage

Middle part of the Triangle Trade Replaced native labor (encomienda system) and indentured servants throughout the Americas Exclusive use of Africans as slaves developed into a political, social, and economic system that gives rise to racism

IV. Mercantilism

Mercantilism = idea that a country gains power by building its supply of bullion (gold/silver) with more exports than imports Exports: Items trade from a home country to a foreign country Imports: Items traded from a foreign country to a home country Colonies create raw materials for the mother country (home country) and served as markets for manufactured goods

Mercantilism leads to a commercial revolution Commercial revolution where money is made by investing in trade creating a “middling class” of merchants and artisans “Seeds of Capitalism” Build up money (capital) for investment Create markets to sell goods Get government out of the way (Free Enterprise)
